Criteria for Review

The Philosophy

When reviewing a movie, play, music, or other piece of art, a review is, at its core, is a subjective journey. Everyone brings something different to the table, making a far different connection to the work. As someone who is reviewing a piece (I dare not call myself a critic), I think a film should be observed by a set of rules, as to even out any personal bias. For example, while I may hold an unreasonable personal disdain for a person, but they may be a fantastic actor (I'm looking at you, Milo Ventimiglia). To criticize using only my personal bias is neither fair to the actor nor interesting or worthwhile to the reader. As I have an unspoken social contract with the reader, I feel it is my responsibility to represent the movie in the most equitable fashion I can, taking personal consideration second to the, albeit subjective, facts of the movie in question. My personal and professional hope is that I bring credibility to the critique, and do my best to leave narcissism and pretentiousness at the door. That is what the reader, and the movie, deserve.
